Suicide: the highest toll we have ever seen

Most suicides are not the end of a long plan but an impulsive act in a moment of crisis — a loss, a breakup, a debt, a shame that feels unsurvivable

The strongest protection is rarely complicated: someone willing to notice, to sit with the pain, and to stay. The Mental Healthcare Act of 2017 treats those who attempt suicide as people needing care, not punishment — a posture the Church should share full

A word to the church

Suicide is the harshest sign of a society losing hope, with rising numbers showing a deeper issue eroding this generation's belief in a future. Each suicide reflects a life seen as beyond help, leaving families and friends to carry that belief unless interrupted.

The global body of Christ must not treat this as a tragedy to respond to only after. We carry a message strong enough to answer despair — no life is beyond restoration — and are called to bring it into the darkest rooms, not just to grieve once it's too late.

Presence before and during crisis is itself Good News. About one in three churchgoers has been touched by suicide, and pastors face the same despair they counsel. We must equip everyone to recognize warning signs and seek help without shame, making the church a place of life, not last grief.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
